I’ve tested almost every tire model in the market during the last 10 years, and when it comes to the Ford Fusion, i can say that the best overall option would be the Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus, however, if you are looking for something that is very durable and will last you a few years, then the Michelin Defender T + H is also a good option. I talked in detail about each of the 6 tires i tested below, so let’s get started!
The Ford Fusion is one of Ford Company signature brand that is popular across the globe especially for family units. The 2019 model is a newer version with slightly more room inside. The vehicle takes the road quite smoothly, but this entirely depends on the state of the vehicle tires, holding other factors constant.
It is thus very critical to ensure that the vehicle tires are in good working conditions and replace them if need be. Although Ford plans to completely phase out the production of this iconic brand, owing to the global shift in preference for the SUVs. The Fusion is still popular among car enthusiasts, especially among middle-class family units.
Obviously to keep your vehicle in optimum performance requires regular maintenance and replacement of various parts, especially movable parts. And therefore it is quite essential that the Ford Fusion tires are replaced once signs of wearing out start to appear. There is no universal vehicle tire lifespan.
Different tires wear and tear differently, and there is no standard or fixed time or mileage when you should change your tire. But generally, almost going by the rule of thumb, it is necessary to examine the tread depth. After considering all the factors outlined above, it is also very crucial and critical that you consider the environmental characteristics of where you’re Ford Fusion will mostly be operating from, and the type of weather the tire will have to battle, and the quality of the roads. If you live in a freezing area that experiences seasonal winter accompanied by snow and ice, then you need tires that are manufactured with larger gaps between trends to allow for more traction. Summer Performance Tires
These tires were specifically designed for the hot summer periods. They are quite fun and stable to drive on whether on dry or wet surfaces. The tires can drive fast and take sharp corners comfortably. They are made from a Silica enhanced compound that is set to provide a much stickier grip on the road. This enhanced silica compound on these tires improves the lifespan of the tires owing to the addition of fillers. The all-new performance racing core coupled with the addition of the silica resulted in a 30% improvement in traction from its original series according to the manufacturer. The most critical merits of this tire are the excellent wave surface traction, handling and steering response and it offers unparalleled value for money (best in its class). However, it is worth noting that the tires produce a little noise as the tread wears.
Initially, i bought these tires for my Ford Explorer, but then i decided to test them with a Ford Focus, and i was impressed.
This one offers excellent handling, cornering power and a very cozy ride on the highway. The manufacturer has incorporated the use of the latest technology in tread compound. It has an asymmetric design and a 3D center block that together work to increase contact with the road surface.
The semi-slick shoulder design drastically improves the cornering grip of the vehicle. Generally, the tires offer excellent traction on dry surfaces, traction on wet surfaces is also not that bad after all and comfort on the highway is unparalleled not forgetting the low road noise.
However, its biggest flaw is the inability to cope well with low temperatures or when the weather gets snowy. The manufacturer claims the tire can last up to 30K miles before replacement is needed.
All Season Performance Tires
This one has been equipped with the latest technology out there in tire manufacturing. This has enabled it to provide a consistent and smooth driving experience across a wide range of weather conditions and road conditions. The tires have the TG-f polymers and Silane additives that ensure excellent traction on both wet and dry surfaces. The symmetric tread pattern allows the tires to have continuous tread-road contact which improves handling and increases steering response.
It incorporates the latest in tire technology with new rubber tread compounds and patterns that provide better handling and stability plus also lasts much longer. It features high amounts of Silica that results in improved traction on both wet and dry surface area. It also sustains and maintains a consistent grip on the surface as the tire wears up until it needs replacement. The interlocking curved patterns provide excellent wet traction as they push away any water that may be trapped between the tire and the road surface. It is also equipped with comfort control technology that provides the rider with a smooth and comfortable ride.
The tires are very reliable on both dry and wet surfaces; offer a very quiet and comfortable ride experience, longer lasting than its predecessors and provides value for money. One demerit is that it does not perform well on deep snow and ice. The tires were quite popular during the early years after launch with the manufacturer claiming a 90K warranty on the tires. Many drivers reported that the treads were wearing out much sooner than expected and this triggered the manufacturer to update the tire to the current model above. Therefore, in addition to the long life claimed the Michelin Defender offers all year riding experience without the need to change tire between seasons. And this is its most significant selling point. But generally, the all-season tire is a good fit for the Ford Fusion.
Touring All-Season Performance Tires
This tire was originally designed for owners of high-end coupes and luxury sedans. It offers only the best in tire technology for the discerning Customer. It has the sunflower oil helio compound that works to increase traction and bring down the braking distance just in case. Michelin went ahead to make a bold claim that the vehicle can stop 19 feet shorter than the leading competitor out there. Michelin has a lot included: their unique comfort control technology that enables the tire design to be computer optimized to reduce or even eliminate road noises and vibrations. It also uses Green X technologies that reduce rolling resistance and hence increases fuel efficiency. The manufacturer warranty for these tires is set at about 50K miles. Generally, the tires offer excellent ride comfort, superb vehicle handling and grip, and excellent power cornering. On the flip side, you should be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for this kind of quality. This model is highly recommended for your Ford Fusion because of its excellent capabilities all year round, but the price tag on them is very costly.
Before i bought a Ford Fusion, i used to drive a Focus, and i can say that the Pirelli P7’s were the best tires i’ve had on my Ford Focus.
This one is also a good fit for the Ford Fusion. It boasts of availing excellent traction all year round, long durability and less rolling resistance. It is made from a silica-based compound that efficiently utilizes tread wear.
It also has multiple sipes along the treads that gives the vehicle increased biting edges on the ground which in turns improves the traction on wet roads with ice or snow. The computer optimized tread design also goes a long way in reducing the road noise making the ride very comfortable and silent.
The tires have also been installed with two steel belts that increase the tire strength and overall durability. Generally, the tire increases fuel efficiency owing to low rolling resistance; it offers a comfortable and quiet ride, amazing dry and wet traction, grip during cornering and stability are also quite impressive.
The extended tread life is also another advantage of the Pirelli Cinturato P7. One demerit is that it tends to grip too much on snow and ice and this dramatically hampers fuel efficiency and rolling resistance.
What Tires Should You Focus On For Ford Fusion?
If you live in frigid places, you may need to consider using special winter tires that come with ceramic studs that are usually protruding from the tires. That feature will allow your Ford Fusion to stabilize and increase vehicle traction on the compacted ice or snow, but it’s worth noting that these ceramic studs are only allowed during winter seasons. Otherwise, if used during summer, they might damage the road, tires and overall reduce fuel use efficiency. Several factors or attributes can be used to distinguish winter tires and summer tires. Winter tires usually have a larger gap between the solid rubbers; they have deeper and wider threads that improve vehicle traction. They also come with a hydrophilic rubber compound that is meant to increase friction between the tire and the wet riding surface. They also come with a smaller aspect ratio between the diameter of the tire and the width of the trends to reduce resistance brought about by the plowing effect of the tires when moving over deep snow. Another feature of winter tires that Fusion owners from a cold area can look out for are the additional sipes on the rubber treads that avail extra biting edges and overall improve vehicle traction. Summer tires, on the other hand, are built for spring to autumn. If you dare drive on these types of tires in cold winter weather with temperatures below 70C the tires will lose their traction properties.
But the Ford Fusion being a mid-sized sedan wasn’t designed to go off-road. Hence, we recommend you to use the all-season type of tires. This only holds water if you don’t live in places with extreme weather. The all-season tires offer amazing traction and good friction with the road surface on both wet and dry conditions. There are several distinct differences between an all-season tire and summer tire. They mostly differ in Contour/Shape, rubber compound and the pattern of the treads. The all-season tires have more sipes to ensure better handling during snowy weather on the other hand summer tires don’t have many sipes as this would result in loss of stiffness during hot summer days.
The rubber compounds used to manufacture all-season tires are designed to deliver acceptable performance over a wide range of temperatures whereas the summer tires only perform best at temperatures above 70C, anything lower than that would seriously impact on the Fusion performance. On the shape/Contour of the tire, summer tires generally have round contours which ensure adequate road grip and reduces the rolling resistance which improves vehicle fuel use efficiency. On the other hand, all-year tires have large square outlines that are similar to those found in winter tires to provide excellent traction during winter weathers. But these enlarged square contours are detrimental during the summer periods as the treads wear faster and increase the Fusions Fuel consumption. But the rule of thumb is not to use winter tires in summer or summer tires in winter; you would instead go with the all-season tires.
