Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac review

If you have followed my articles you already know that I am an avid off-road driving fan and I like to go off-roading on every opportunity that I can. For that reason I like testing these tires so much, and also for the same reason I put my eyes on the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac.

This tire looks like it is going to deliver one of the most capable performances for off-roading, which should be expected from the price of these tires, and if the reviews are true this might be a beast especially for winter.

Target Audience

The manufacturer states that this tire is a dedicated workhorse tire that is rugged enough for off-road terrain, plus snow conditions. Yet it still promises to deliver a relatively quieter ride on the pavement.

These are some bold claims, it is like the trifecta of the perfect all-terrain all-season tire, quiet ride, great off-roading, and exceptional snow performance, also when you take into consideration that it is designed for SUVs, CUVs, light trucks, and jeeps it is even harder to deliver all that.

I have high expectations though, as the company is pretty reliable and the price reflects premium performance. During my initial tests, these tires worked great with my FJ Cruiser, so let’s dive in deeper.

Specs and Features

This tire is engineered for perfection and I can comfortably say that this tire is equipped with the latest technology that the company has to offer, to deliver a better all-around experience. First off, I have to say that this tire comes with a limited warranty for treadwear, for tire uniformity, materials, and workmanship for 6 years. It also comes in a pretty desirable size range, spanning from 15 to 20 inches in size, which is pretty good for most SUVs and light trucks around in the market.

Like a proper all-season all-terrain tire, the tread compound of this tire is manufactured to handle the tough day-to-day requirements for off-roading, heavy-holding, and towing. I should also mention that the body of the tire is chip, tear and chunk resistant, which is very important in such a tire. It also has a symmetric tread design that has self-cleaning shoulder blocks that have proven to be extremely effective for preventing the build-up of dirt, snow, gravel, and mud, for enhanced performance and stability.

For the dry and wet asphalt, this tire is reinforced with a high angled center tread block that is designed specifically for increasing traction and delivers lateral stability. For the snow, this tire is severe snow certified and it is also pinned for 16 metal studs for those that require a bit more in heavy snow and icy roads and terrains. Moving on it has the super special TractiveGroove technology that is placed at the bottom of the circumferential groove to deliver more biting edges for better traction. Before I finish, I should mention that this tire inside has two steel belts with nylon reinforcement for added strength and durability.

First Impression

When you will first take a look at these tires you know that they mean business, these are badass. I felt that way, and I can say that these are a bit heavy and aggressively looking.

I installed them on a Ford Ranger which was a pretty easy and straightforward job, and overall I can say that they look extremely good on the truck. The first spin around the block was surprisingly comfortable and pretty good overall.

Testing

I have extensively tested these tires through thick and thin, in different conditions, dry, wet, snow, off-roading, on the highway and much more. I put on 12,000 miles on them and I think that I have a good amount of knowledge on them. I have to say that I feel the same way as the majority of people here, these tires are excellent and no wonder why these are extremely popular overall. First of all, I should mention that the tread life of these tires is excellent overall, and I can say that they wear pretty well. The durability is over the top, no chipping and no tearing on this tire at all. On top of that, the added rim lock for wheel slips and the rim protector do their jobs at keeping your wheel protected at all times.

I tested these tires on various weathers, hot, cold, dry, wet, snow, ice, these can handle everything. The design suits all the surfaces without a doubt while still delivering you an immense amount of traction and grip so you can feel comfortable behind the wheel. In the rain, it was exceptional, as you don’t feel any decrease in the performance and it resists hydroplaning extensively, thanks to the wide groove design. In the winter it is the best in the market, in its category. It keeps you safe on ice and snow.

In off-road testing this tire showed why it is such a highly rated and fan-favorite product it can conquer all terrains, soft, loose, uneven or hard, this one does it for everyone avid off-roader. The symmetric tread pattern works pretty well and it provides you especially good performance on mud, which is the nightmare of every driver but fear not, since the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac can get you through everything.

Verdict

I can comfortably say that if you are looking for an all-season all-terrain tire for your SUV or light truck, you are definitely in for a treat with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. The winter performance is one of the strongest suits of this tire, and if you live in areas that get some harsher winters, also your daily route requires extensive off-roading, this tire is perfect for you.
