Goodyear Wrangler SR-A Review

Last Updated on August 3, 2021 by Stephen Tillman

Light truck, SUV and crossover tires are a little confusing, despite looking like a pretty straight forward and simple choice at first. I have done plenty of research and reviewed a large number of tires for these vehicles, but I have always determined that it is always better to stick with the big-name brands. For today I have decided to review the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, which if it is anything like the reviews that it has received should be one of the most impressive all-season touring tires. Let’s get into it.

Main Features Of The Goodyear Wrangler SR-A

Target Audience

The manufacturer has marketed these tires as their best highway driving tires with enhanced traction, good tread wear and handling on wet roads, for SUVs, light trucks and crossovers. I should also mention that these tires are one of the most popular original tires on a wide range of pickup trucks, and recently they have been extremely popular as replacements. I decided to roll the dice here since I don’t like stock tires on cars, but we will see for ourselves upon deeper testing and inspection.

They are definitely amongst the best tires for crossovers, because they have a lot of things to offer.

Specs and Features

Looking at the manufacturer website and the price of these tires you will see that they are mid-range tires, that should deliver mid-range performance at the very least. While I am skeptical about stock tires on cars, I haven’t had the most extensive experience with pickup trucks and if many manufacturers push them they should be at least decent. The manufacturer has delivered a limited tread life warranty of 50,000 miles which is mediocre at the very best, but then again there are reports that users have put about 60,000 miles on them before needing a swap. Not its best suit I have to say.

The Goodyear Wrangler SR-As are all-season tires that are packed with tread compounds that are specifically designed with the company’s WetTrac technology. This technology like its name implies should work pretty well on wet surfaces, but without testing, it is hard to say. The symmetrical tread pattern inspires plenty of confidence though in this aspect, as users reported that it delivered good traction on wet surfaces, gravel, mud, and light snow. I should also state that the grooves are pretty wide in circumference and the zig-zag sipes should push the water from under the tire.

The tread blocks are designed interestingly and they should deliver plenty of grips even under the heavier vehicles. On top of that in the construction of the tire, you will find two high tensile steel belts that are responsible for better durability and strength. Before moving on I should mention that these tires are available in different sizes for rims ranging from 15 to 20 inches and also come in P, LT and heavy-duty D and E load ranges which should be enough for most of us.

First Impressions

The first impression on these tires is that they are stock looking, pretty bland and unassuming. Well, you would guess it but they give a nice vibe of reliability, but we shall see that in a few.

I installed a full set of the Goodyear Wrangler SR-A’s on a Ford Ranger and I learned that Ford uses these tires as stock on this vehicle. They look okay on the truck, then again after the first spin I didn’t notice anything unusual, further testing will reveal more about this.

Testing

After the initial break-in phase, these tires firstly revealed one thing. The tread wears pretty evenly and it does it excellently, which was surprising. Then again it would be unbearably combined with the mediocre 50,000 miles treadwear warranty. These tires are designed for the highway and touring, and they do their job perfectly for that. Delivering a comfortable driving experience, and no noise at all, which is pretty good considering my expectations. I can say that these tires are extremely reliable, to say the least.

On dry pavement, I have tested these tires extensively and I can say that the acceleration is rather smooth, and the braking distance is adequate considering its price point. While you might not explicitly corner sharply and drive aggressively with an SUV or a light truck, I tested these tires in those scenarios, and it delivered a good amount of traction and grip. Emergency handling and braking were good enough as well, nothing out of the ordinary.

Going to the wet pavement these tires are pretty interesting, as they delivered an exceptional performance. If you are living in wet and rainy climates these tires should be your best bet. They were pretty resistant to hydroplaning and they maintained contact with the asphalt at all times, which is extremely impressive and right on point with the buyer feedback. In the snow and ice, it was also pretty good, not that it can replace a dedicated winter tire, but if you are living in areas with not as much snow it is excellent.

Verdict

We rated these tires as one of the best tires for GMC Sierra, to be precise, we named them the ‘best for the money’ option.

Taking everything into consideration, if you are living in an area that gets a lot of rain, these tires might be perfect for your SUV or pickup. But then again these are nothing exceptional on dry pavement or don’t deliver some very long tread life. Mediocre at all areas, but super reliable in the wet and ice, a must consider.
